Arm

My poor little buddy broke a bone in his arm Thursday night. Joe was at a church meeting so I was putting the kids to bed. They were all ready for bed. We just had to read stories yet. We were all in our sitting area but I missed seeing him jump off of the gliding footstool ( that goes with our glider/rocker).  He right away started crying and said he broke his arm. I obviously didn't know if he really had or not.  After a little bit, he was still crying that it hurt and wouldn't move his arm. I could tell the pain was worse than normal. I texted Joe and asked when he'd be home and thankfully he said he was about done with his meeting. Em came to our house to sit with the girls while they slept and Joe and I took Gibs to Zeeland's Urgent Care.  Sure enough, it was broken.  They think he probably went flying off the thing (since he jumped off a moving object) and caught himself with his hand and that caused impact on his elbow causing it to break. They put a splint on Thursday night and then we got an appointment Friday morning at an orthopedic to put his cast on. Because if how the bone bent when it broke, the doctor isn't positive that a cast would mend it correctly together, so he could need surgery, but hopefully not.  The doctor said he was happy with the X-ray after the cast was on so hopefully it still looks good in a week. He'll have weekly X-rays and should need the cast on for 6 weeks.  Pics are out of order...
Resting comfortably at home.
Enjoying a juice box after getting his cast on. It was sad seeing them set his bones back together. He cried for that, but did well the rest of the appointment. I think I might cry if they had to do that to me!  Neither Joe or I have ever broken a bone so that was new to us.
Happy for the moment (but SO tired from being at the hospital late the night before)        .
With the splint on...
The broken part is dark part on the right side of the top bone at the bottom of it... Like to the right and up a bit from the curser. You can see how the bone tipped down.
X-ray time...

In A Year's Time

It's funny how normal it feels  now to be in our house.  Kind of feels like we've been here for years.  But really, it's only been a little over 6 months.  Last January our concrete was poured while we were in Florida and we were so excited.  It's fun to think back to how exciting every step of the building process was--for us and for the kids.  January and February were pretty snowy last year (and it's looking to be worse this year--yuck!) so not a whole lot happened until the end of February.  Thankfully there was a week in early January that we could at least pour the foundation, but then the excavating took awhile due to the weather and framing started mid-February.  After that it progressed very quickly.  Anyway, this was after the concrete was poured and some dirt was brought in...
This was the end of February...so exciting that it was finally looking like a house!
And this is how it looks in our first winter our house.  It's been pretty snowy and cold and lots of snow and super cold temps are headed our way soon!  Layla is supposed to go back to school on Monday, but there is a chance that she may not have school.  The last day before Christmas break was also a snow day (the first one of the school year).  I admit, I would love for her to have off on Monday.  It's been so great having her home again.  I'll miss her going back to school!  I'm sure Gibs and Greta will too!  They of course have plenty of moments of fighting, but they've been so into playing with their new Christmas toys, that it's made it really fun to just be home.  Joe had the week off between Christmas and New Years which was really nice too to get some projects done and to spend time together as a family.  We've played lots of games (mainly a new one Gibs' got for his birthday--Disney's Eye Found It--they love it!).

And since I mentioned Joe's projects, here's one of them.  We had planned to put lockers here, but having the bench here has been handy and we mainly just need some hooks, so we decided to just do hooks for now.  He then put up a shelf under our countertop in our laundry room for hat/gloves basket storage.  It has definitely made it more convenient for when I don't feel like hanging up all of our coats in the closet :-).

2 Year Stats

Greta had her 2 year appointment almost a month ago now and realized when going through paperwork today, that I never posted her stats.

Appointment 12/9/13
Weight: 25 lbs 13 oz
Height: 35"
Head: 48 cm

Layla was a half an inch shorter than her at two and Gibs was a half an inch taller than her.  Gibs weighed 4 lbs more and Layla weighed 3 lbs less than her.  Greta and Gibs I think at age one had about the same stats, so interesting that that is changing a bit now.  Ok, good, now I can file that paperwork away :-).  I never enjoy keeping up on that!

Christmastime is Upon Us

Compared to most people, we don't really have many Christmas parties to attend this year.  Somewhat last minute, my extended Buursma side planned a party, but that's it as far as "extra" parties (aside from immediate families on Christmas Eve and Christmas).  We don't have any work parties since Joe's employer doesn't have one and mine doesn't either for some reason (ha, kidding, I don't have a job).  We only see my Buursma side once a year at the most, so it's always good to catch up.  I do however, occasionally now see my cousin's wife, Carissa, at school from time to time. They have a son that is also in the Mandarin class at ZCS, so Layla and Gavin now know him which is fun.  They think it's pretty cool at school to have so many cousins (2nd or 3rd or whatever they are) in the same class since there are so many sib sets in their class.  They were very excited to get to hang out with Jake outside of school!

Not sure why Greta has one finger up--probably b/c sometimes to make her smile I say, "where's the camera?".  Or she may still want people to think she's one since she enjoys being the baby :-).
I copied Joe's family's Thanksgiving Day game of doing a "cake walk" as an easy and active way to distribute gifts to the kids.
I seriously attempted like a dozen times to get a good pic of them smiling and Greta was the most cooperative.  Gibs and Layla claimed they were trying, but for some reason neither could manage to put on a "normal" smile.
Layla and Gavin had their Jingle Jog today at school.  Since I am new to this whole elementary school thing, I had no idea what that was, but was told that parents could come.  ZCS I guess every year, has the kids run for a certain amount of time (I'm not really sure how long it was, Layla thought 11 minutes, but that may not be entirely accurate--somewhere close to that) through the gym and around the hall and then back through the gym, while being cheered on by parents/siblings/grandparents.  They collect money from sponsors and the money then goes to their sister school in the Philippines.  Parents and siblings are also welcome to run with them for some laps if they want to.  All the kids wear Christmas apparel for the jog.
Since all the kids had Christmas shirts on today, it seemed like a perfect opportunity for a picture and it turned out to be MUCH more successful than my attempt last Friday night!  Greta cracks me up recently with just how much she loves all things "pretty" as she says, especially wearing skirts.  I took this skirt off of her for lunch and supper so that she wouldn't spill on it (since she now thinks she's too big to sit in her booster or high chair) and as soon as she's done eating, she wants it right back on.

Decking the Halls

I love this time of year!  I don't enjoy the cold weather it brings, but I don't start REALLY disliking it until about late January/early February.  So for now, the snow is pretty outside (although melting right now).  I love putting up our Christmas tree--it just gives a house such a warm and cozy feel to it.  It reminds me of feeding Greta in the night beside the glow of the Christmas tree...ah, how these two years have gone by so fast!  The kids were excited to put the tree up this year because of course they love the tree, but also because for a family gift this year, we got the Disney World monorail to go around it.  I think it's a pretty nice addition to our tree :-).  Many of the kids' ornaments are Disney too, so it's turning into a bit of a Disney themed tree :-).  Each year, the kids pick an ornament out (or I pick it if they are too little).  With my help, they pick something that represents what they were really into this year.  Last year Gibs got a panda one, Layla got a baking one and Greta got a cupcake.  This year, Layla chose an Aurora ornament, Gibs chose "Magic Mickey" (it's actually Sorcerer Mickey, he just calls him Magic Mickey), and Greta got Pooh b/c she loves that movie (and in Disney World, called him Pooh-ah when we met him, which we found cute).

And one of the little girlies today...

Big Little Helper

Gibs was the special helper today in Threeschool so I got to go to school with him and help in the classroom.  I always find it interesting to see how my child acts in class, as well as how the other kids act.  Always an interesting day helping 3 year olds paint :-).

A Few Disney Pics

Here are a few Photopass pics from our recent trip!
