No Ice Cream For Me!

The doctor thinks that Layla might be allergic to cow's milk. That means that I have to not eat ANY dairy. I love dairy!! I just started cutting out dairy from my diet last night and it's already been difficult! I almost added cheese to my sandwich tonight but caught myself before I started eating it. It's unlike any other diet--I want to cheat, but for the sake of my child I know I can't. Hopefully this will help with her fussy attitude. Please pray that the reason for her upset stomach is due to the dairy--that way we'll be able to fix her problem. Also, if she really is allergic to cow's milk, that doesn't mean that she's lactose intolerant--she would be allergic to the protein in cow's milk, not to the sugar lactose. Baby's also often outgrow allergies, so hopefully she'd outgrow it in a bit! We have a doctor's appointment scheduled for next week, so hopefully her sypmtoms improve before then or we might have to go see the doctor sooner:-(.

Hey Mere...it's Lisa Howe from work...I went out to check how things are going since Layla came home and had to leave a quick comment on your latest posting. Glad to hear things are going well. It's a fun adventure! But what I wanted to say is that I had to cut dairy out of my diet with Owen and it was so hard to get used to but it changed his fussiness almost OVERNIGHT! I never wanted to admit he had colic when we were screaming for the first 3 months but now I am the first to admit that. But taking out dairy really did help. Once you get thru the initial withdrawal, I think you'll actually be amazed at how great you feel...dairy bogs our systems down more than we could have ever thought! And if soy agrees with you okay (I found out I was allergic to soy when I drank soy milk) you'll have lots of options for yogurt, milk, ice cream and such. I had to use goats milk for cereal...ugh! But now I hardly drink milk and I'm just fine with it. I'm sure your doctor will remind you to take calcium supplements :) Hang in there and know that it is worth it if it helps that little girl smile more....you'll smile more too! It will get easier each day and hang in there.

Lisa again...I forgot to mention that Owen did best with soy formula once we switched him to formula and we gradually introduced dairy and at 14 months, he's perfectly fine with regular dairy. Had it been different, we'd make the adjustment as a family but it's been easier then we thought. :)

Thanks for the info Lisa! The reason they thought she was allergic to milk was b/c she had blood in her poop--that has gone away, but she's still pretty fussy--I can tell her tummy really bothers her when she eats. However, it can take a little time for dairy to get out of my system. I'm really hoping that if she is allergic that she outgrows it soon--I have TONS of frozen milk that I'd be so mad if we had to throw it all away--what a waste of time!! She was getting a milk fortifier in her bottles, but we ran out of that yesterday so I'm switching to formula for 2 bottles a day (a formula for premies), so hopefully that doesn't mess things up for her! I don't know if they make that formula in soy...
This motherhood thing has definitely been frustrating at times so it's good to hear that others struggle with some of the same issues too!! :-)
